Zaterdag 20 januari

De temperaturen in Santander waren de afgelopen week uitzonderlijk hoog, tot 18° wanneer de zon uitzat. Ook vandaag begint de dag heel goed. Het eerste wat we doen is naar het busstation afzakken om bustickets te kopen voor het plan van volgende week: een 3-daagse uitstap naar Salamanca en Burgos, van donderdag tot zaterdag. Daarna nemen we het overzetbootje vanuit de haven van Santander naar Somo, een dorpje aan de andere kant van de baai van Santander dat een langwerpig strand heeft in de baai. Jammer genoeg overtrekt het weer algauw maar we kunnen toch wat luieren op het strand en een lange wandeling maken tot aan het uiterste puntje van het strand.

Zondag 21 januari

Omdat de bergwandelingen van de unief altijd de moeite zijn, had ik ons beide ingeschreven voor de tocht van zondag 21 januari. Op het programma staat de beklimming van de Picón del Carlista (700m klimmen) en het bezoek aan de Cueva de Pozalagua, een grot waar ze zo’n honderd jaar geleden prehistorische tekeningen ontdekt hebben. Echter, omdat het weer die dag ietsje minder en regenachtig aanzet, beslissen de gidsen om een alternatieve route te nemen. De paadjes zijn immers nogal rotsachtig en niet zo duidelijk te onderscheiden en dus met een groep van 80 man te risicovol bij slecht weer. Jammer, maar ja. De alternatieve route lijkt meer op een zondags wandelingetje naar de top van een grasheuvel, maar al bij al valt het nog mee, zeker omdat het toch de hele dag droog blijft. Een hele hoop mooie uitzichten en het gezelschap van de Duitse Erasmussers maken onze dag goed. We zijn vroeg terug in Santander en lopen dan nog eens tot aan de stranden van Sardinero tot aan het península de la Magdalena. Deze avond is er een uitzonderlijk hoog tij en de metershoge golven slaan over de pier, wat een indrukwekkend zicht geeft bij de minizoo op het península.

Maandag 22 januari

Het is de laatste lesweek van het semester. Niet dat dit extra druk teweeg brengt, maar ik moet toch naar een aantal lessen gaan omdat het practica zijn die verband houden met de eindwerkjes. Vandaag heb ik maar les om 18u30 zodat we eerst nog een uitstapje hier in Cantabria plannen, meerbepaald naar Laredo. Ik was er al eens vlug-vlug geweest op 1 november en deze keer zagen we iets meer van het oude centrum. Dikke tegenvaller deze keer was wel de regen. In België zijn paraplus voor mietjes, maar hier in Noord-Spanje kun je echt wel niet zonder als het begint te regenen. Nu, we hebben de heuvel die over de baai en de stad uitkijkt beklommen in de regen en het uitzicht blijft de moeite waard.

Donderdag 25 januari

Dinsdag en donderdag is Wouter naar Bilbao en San Sebastián in Baskenland geweest en vandaag is het dus de dag waarop we naar Salamanca vertrekken. De laatste twee dagen heeft het heel veel geregend en gehageld in het Noorden en vanaf een hoogte van 400-500m liggen er pakken sneeuw. Ook de skipistes die vorige week nog grasweiden waren, zijn nu geopend. Op de tv toonden ze al de besneeuwde wegen en ook Miguel, m’n Spaanse kotgenoot, zegt dat de kans groot is dat de rit over de bergen naar Burgos niet mogelijk is door de sneeuw. We vertrekken ’s morgens vroeg toch naar het station en daar bevestigen ze dat de wegen afgesloten zijn en er dus geen bussen naar Salamanca rijden vandaag…. We krijgen onze ticketjes terugbetaald en keren naar huis terug. We slapen nog wat en doen dan ’s middags nog wat site-seeing in Santander naar Cabo de Faro Mayor (de grote vuurtoren) en naar mijn faculteit, waar mijn eerste Spaanse punten uithagen ad valvas (7/10 voor dirección comercial).

Vrijdag 26 januari

Vandaag steunen we het toerisme in Cantabrië. We nemen de bus van de maatschappij La Cantabrica naar Comillas en San Vicente de la Barquera. In Comillas zien we een huis van Gaudi met sprookjesallures en lopen we rond in het dorpscentrumpje en tot aan de zee. De bus pikt ons op om 14u om door te rijden naar San Vicente de la Barquera, dat als bloeiende havenstad in de Middeleeuwen over een mooi gerestaureerde burcht en kerk beschikt. Toegang tot de kasteelmuren is jammer genoeg wel niet mogelijk in januari. Achter de kerk is er een mooi uitzicht op de riviermonding en de achterliggende besneeuwde bergen. We lopen ook over de lange brug over de riviermonding, en daarna tot aan het strand.

Zaterdag 27 januari

Na een week uitstapjes maken is de planning voor een volgende dag niet altijd even evident meer. Toch komen we op het uitstekende plan om nu toch naar het zuiden tot in Burgos te reizen. De wegen zijn weer open en we kochten onze bustickets gisterenavond al. We zitten drie uur op de bus in het doorgaan en drie uur in het terugkeren, maar het was zeker de moeite waard! We reizen door een prachtig besneeuwd landschap tot in Burgos dat op een zo’n 800 à 900m hoog plateau ligt. Het historische stadscentrum met als architecturaal hoogtepunt de kathedraal is extreem mooi. De kathedraal is ronduit indrukwekkend en toegegeven toch ietsje specialer dan onze St.-Salvators :-). Ook een bezoek aan het interieur en het museum is een absolute aanrader. Het vriest de hele dag door maar ook dat is het waard want de besneeuwde huizen en parkjes, de bevroren fonteintjes, de Spaanse meisjes op de bevroren fonteintjes en de warme cafés en tapa bars gaven een extra meerwaarde aan ons bezoek van Burgos.

Excursión Santoña - Laredo

1st November. No classes in university and therefore and excellent opportunity to travel and explore the region around Santander. As Marco and I had already marked this day in our agendas a long time before, I almost started to invite people to join us for the trip without having fixed a destination. On Sunday evening we eventually decided to go by bus to the city of Santoña, a small village about 35 kilometers east of Santander.

Until one week ago we had extremely good late summer weather here in Cantabria. Now it seems that this story is coming to an end. Wednesday was one of the first colder days –and in the beginning rainy as well.

Once arrived in Santoña, we had a coffee in a bar and tried to find out what there was actually to see here. We means Inga, Katrin, Sebastian and Dominik from Germany, Sarah from the US, Thomas from Sweden, Marco from Brasil and I. The fishing harbour is really beautiful and after we had spent some time taking pictures of eachother, the bay and the hills covered in blankets of fog, we continued our way along the water. After we had checked out the church of Santoña, it seemed that we had seen more or less everything there was to see in Santoña. We returned to the bus station to check when we could go to Laredo, a village nearby.

After the lunch we took the bus there, and Laredo appeared to be bigger and to our taste also more beautiful than Santoña. Some small streets of the older city part lead us to the ascent of a hill overlooking Laredo and the sea bay –breathtaking! We spend more than one hour walking around, admiring the marvelous views and taking pictures. After the descent we went to see the beach and then it was already time to catch our bus back to Santander. Seeing Laredo in two hours, it was not easy but I think we saw a beautiful part of it. Excursión de montaña entre Pesaguero y Potes

The Picos de Europa are a mountain chain in the west of Cantabria and one of the nature elements that make the province of Santander so special. Less than 50 kilometers away from the coast, but on 2 hours driving from Santander that lies in the north-east of Cantabria, you encounter an extraordinary mountain landscape.
The university of Cantabria organises 5 mountain excursions in the first semester. When I found out, I didn’t hesitate a second and subscribed me for the first trip. Early in the morning of October 15^th the bus took us from the bus station of Santander to the starting point of the mountain walk, the village Pesaguero in the Liébana region.
I knew before that three of my Erasmus friends would also participate to the excursion, two French sisters, Elsa and Jessica, and a German boy, Dominik. I expected to meet lots of other students, but there were not so many students at all, in fact very little. The majority of the group are working people and not so young anymore. A friend of Liselotte, the Belgian lady who arranged my flat, told me that the group of hikers is pretty fixed and participates every year. Every year some new students join the group. Anyhow, the few Spanish and foreign students I met are very friendly, as are the other Spanish people. During the next mountain trips I will surely get to know them better!
The first kilometers of the trip were very relaxed and as we walked on the flanks of some hills we got a few beautiful views on the valley and the surrounding mountains. After the warming up, we walked up the flank of the hill Peña Corvera (1.212m), on a very steep path – exhausting! On the top of Peña Corvera we got a extraordinary overview of all the mountains in the Liébana region and our friendly guide gave some explanations. For the weather was extremely good, we could really see all peaks of the Picos chain in the region.
We had lunch on a grass field about fifty meters below the top of the hill. Afterwards awaited us a long but beautiful descend, first along the flank of Peña Corvera until the village of Tudes, and then further to Potes, the capital of the region.
I enjoyed this mountain trip very much. Not only because I like hiking, but the more because it is totally different from the student life in Santander: university during the week and going out and beach in the weekends…

La Universidad de Cantabria

The University of Cantabria in Santander differs from our home university in Ghent in many ways. The university was founded in 1972 and because it is pretty young a first remarkable fact is that the buildings of almost all faculties –exceptions are e.g. schools of medicine and nautical engineering– are nicely lined up next to eachother in the Avenida de los Castros, the street of the university. Therefore, you won’t see any students rushing on their bicycles from one campus or faculty to another. Actually, although Santander is a coast town, riding a bike is quite impossible here, for roads in the direction city center – University are too much uphill and downhill…
Another funny thing is that inside the building of the faculties of Law and Economics & Company Sciences there is actually an office of a bank –Banco de Santander– and also of a savings&insurace agency –Caja Cantabria. All payments for registration at university or for sports activities have to be arranged in the Banco de Santander…
There are around 11.000 students studying at this university. If I am correct this is about three times less than in Ghent, but I think that accommodation like computer rooms, working libraries and sports possibilities are as good, or even better than in Ghent. In every faculty you have very nicely equipped computer rooms and one of the buildings in the street of the university is the Pabellón de Deportes, the Sports Pavilion.

Enough of commercials… My lovely Italian assistant Martina and I talked to some of the local students. Our first interviewees –who didn’t feel like being in a picture– think it is a good university to study at: dynamic, well equipped,… I didn’t perfectly understand the minor points so I forgot them… According to some other students (see third picture), classes start way too early for the Spanish rhythm. Too early means 8:30, as in Ghent, but you need to know that the hours in Spain are used a bit differently. Classes until 20:30 are common and people have dinner starting from 21h. (My Spanish roommates have dinner around 22:30…) Two girls studying engineering (see first picture) think that the atmosphere to work in the library of the Economics Faculty is way better than in the library of the Engineers, for students are more quiet here and not chatting all the time. Four fourth year mathematic students claim that their studies are too difficult… We also talked to 3 girls (see fourth picture) in their first year of civil engineering (burgerlijk bouwkunde). They told us that all classes they have are mathematics and fysics, and also a little bit of constructional drawing… Three boys (see last picture) in their first year of industrial engineer (burgerlijk ingenieur) complain about the lack of girls in their classes.
